February 12th - the first day of the TBJ Film Festival

First at noon, a film for the kids:

The Secret of Kells is a 2009 Irish-French-Belgian animated feature film by Cartoon Saloon that premiered on February 8, 2009, at the Berlin International Film Festival.

When Vikings attack an Irish abbey, the monks must stop work on the legendary Book of Kells and protect their home. So Brendan, the 12-year-old nephew of Abbott Cellach, is tasked with completing the magnificent work.

And at 3pm, a film for the adults:

The Plot Against Harry. (1970)

Fresh from a nine-month stint in stir for racketeering, two-bit mafioso Harry Plotnick (Martin Priest) finds his familiar world disintegrating. For starters, Harry is about to lose his numbers racket, and his family thinks he's not only a disgrace but a schnook to boot. Things only go from bad to worse when born loser Harry suffers a televised heart attack in this satiric gem from writer-director Michael Roemer.

February 26th will feature The Prince of Egypt for the kids, followed by A Mighty Heart.

Cosponsored with the JCC. Open to the public.

From Jewish Federation

Dear Members and Friends the Jewish Federation of Greater Orange County,

We read in Pirke Avot:  "The day is short, the task is great..." (PA 2:20)

Four days ago was Super Sunday:  the day once a year when members of the Jewish community are called and asked for their financial support of the Jewish Federation of Greater Orange County.

Who does the calling?  Volunteers.  In our case (I am proud to say)  almost the entire Board of the Jewish Federation and many other volunteers from all over the County volunteered to help out.  It's not especially easy to call strangers and ask them for money, but I think the dozens of volunteers from all areas of our community realized that something bigger than themselves was happening.  The money that comes into the Federation is dispersed to various Jewish organizations and projects that assist people locally (Jewish and non-Jewish), globally and in Israel. The Federation is, in some sense, the beating heart of the Jewish community as aid is provided to it and it then circulates the aid where needed.

Raising funds for the Federation is an unending task, but as the next entry in Pirke Avot states, "It is not up to you to complete the task, but you are not free to desist from it." (PA 2:21)

We all do our part, one way or another.  For those of you that did volunteer thank you.  What about the rest of us?  When you were called, did you say yes?  If you weren't called, are you willing to take the initiative and contact the Federation?  I hope that answer is yes. The Federation number is 845-562-7860.  Ask for Joyce.

None of us individually can complete the task, but we are each called upon to do our part.
